How Do You Wash Your Car?

@6102Perf here is how I do it :

I hide the car by putting the work van in front and putting tall pieces of cardboard in other spots. I've had too many kids and teens walking all the way back in my driveway, and vehicles park in front. One time while washing the car one one guy walked up my driveway put his cigarette down near the car to take closer look. No Focks given it was a private property then proceeded with "I know a guy with bla bla bla..."

I put towels over the engine to prevent water from reaching the engine and pooling in cavities.
I rinse the car with a hose then I use a garden hose foam gun. I no longer use a pressure washer, too time consuming to put it all together and it ripped off the paint off the aero kit of the Corvette. By the way very rarely mentioned you don't need a ton of soap, the soap is for lubrification, lubrification means less resistance by the dirt being dragged across when you use mitts.

I use the one bucket method, a 2-3 cap full of soap with 5-6 mitts, I like to use Meguiar's gold class soap. I use one mitt to wash one section, flip the mitt for another section then discard it, I use all 5-6 mitts. I wash the top sections first, I never put the mitts back in the bucket. That way the water is always clean. Those videos where you put the mitt back in the bucket means you are inserting dirt into your water and transfering it back onto the car. I always wash gently in straight lines I never swirl, I do not put pressure on the mitt. I then rinse the car off.

I use a few microfiber rags to clean the frunk, door sills, door trims, under the engine hood.

I use a Griot's Garage super absorber towel to dry and compressed air for the wheels, grills, gas cap, mirrors.

The mitts are washed in the washing machine with the rest of the clean water and soap from the bucket. Don't forget to clean the bucket as dirt clings to it.

I also like to use Meguiar's tire shine.

2+ hours, what tools/products are you using for washing? Do you own a pressure washer or is everything by hand? And for the privacy part, is your property set off a main street with lots of onlookers passing by? I can see how washing a bright orange lambo would attract some attention lol

If i can wash inside my shed I will. Floor drain, AC and no sun makes it nice but....since I'm a slob and the owner of MANY unfinished projects, the driveway is the next best thing. I still dry to avoid high noon sun.
Spray car off with hose, then spray down with foam cannon, then spray again.
I use 1 bucket with the silt strainer on the bottom, I use 1 mit...I REALLY like your multi-mit idea. Never thought of that. I have many. lol I go top to bottom to keep the most dirt down.
I hand scrub the wheels with microfiber/brush/mit whatever works
Then I spray down again
I pull out the big leaf blower to do all the drying Open all doors/hood and blow
Take microfiber to do all door jams, hood trim etc.

That is for a full clean.

If the car is clean, just dusty or maybe has some bug guts, I will use Adams detail spray and a microfiber and go over the car. It will usually dry that way as well. Adds a nice shine.

If a full clean isn't enough, I break out the clay bar to do some detailing, and then wax or ceramic spray (not ceramic coating, too poor) after drying

I never used a clay bar for the reason it scratches the paint. Everytime I went to see car shows I always wondered why so many show cars the paint looked so damn scratched with swirls. I thought to myself they rub the paint so much with so many products like polishes, waxes, clay bars etc no wonder it's damaging the paint. When they get to the show with a little dust they rub some more with detailer products, more scratches are added.

The Vette is now 10 years old and the black paint doesn't have swirls like I see on other cars. All I do is wash it, nothing else. That tells me the less you fool around putting all that stuff on and rubbing promotes more wear and scratches.

You foam the car then hose it off? You don't want to leave the foam on while you wash the car?

I’ve started using simpler methods as I get older.

My main tool is a pressure washer.

Wheels --> Body --> Wax

I always start with the wheels. I rinse the wheels and tires, spray Armor All, give them a light scrub, then rinse again.

Next is the body. I use medium pressure water, then foam the car with Meguiar Gold Class. I do not let the soap sit for long. I rinse everything in one go, including the body, wheels, and tires. I do not use mitts or brushes. I avoid touching the paint as much as possible.

I then use an air blower to blow off the water. If there are a few dirt marks left, I leave them alone. By this point the soap has already softened them. After that, I use microfiber towels only on the frunk and door jambs to remove leftover water or soap.

Finally, I apply carnauba wax with microfiber towels. Any remaining dirt is soft at this stage and comes off easily. The key is to avoid dragging anything across the paint.

For the wheels, I use a harder wax.

That's it!

For me If even when I used a pressure washer all alone there would be many spots of dirt left on. On the H it wouldn't show as much but on the black car mitts is a must.

My 1st post since joining 5 min ago :) . I wash my car in the garage. The fewer people know I have these cars the better for me. An acquaintance of mine who is a police officer finally got to see my cars and felt my approach was good. I use about 1/2 a gallon of water. I start by using a duster. I bought a 1 gallon sprayer from Home Depot. I spray water mist on the car. I next use microfiber towel to remove the water off the car. I then soap the car using a mitt and use the 2 bucket method to wash the car. I then repeat the rinse process. Next I dry the car using microfiber towels. Waxing follows.

Welcome to the forum! That's a beautiful Murci you got there!

A Lambo is a dude magnet and a jelly magnet. It is usually best to keep shiny things inconspicuous and low key.

I may try washing my car in the garage one of these days. None of the electrical equipment is on the floor, and the floor is epoxy coated.

That is interesting. The Atlas has metallic flakes whereas Borealis does not. I don't do my own service.

I didn't know atlas had metallic flakes, that's fascinating. Borealis has pearls. Speaking of paint, I had a batch of borealis made yesterday. Check this out, a tri coat process.

You are not wrong. I only use it when I need to get out some sort of blemish. Then I polish the area and use swirl remover. Usually with an orbital.

I wash it off because the foam lifts a lot of dirt off the paint, and I have additional soap in my bucket. So, I hose, foam, hose, then scrub to hopefully have the fewest contaminants still on the paint.

Claying is a lot of work. I did clay my 91' 300ZX TT and have contemplated claying the F430 BUT the lazy man in my head says "woah!, hold on a second!" :)

I got bored last fall and jumped onto a Garage forum and got enamored with the idea of a pressure wash setup inside the garage. I copied what some folks did over there and wound up with this setup. I plan to nail down some kinda routine for cleaning the car(s). I have little/no experience with using the foam gun, etc, etc.

@Luzifer - the multiple mitt thing is a great idea that I think I'm going to adopt ASAP. It makes so much more sense (and safer) than rinsing off the one mitt

Awesome set up! I bought a cheaper (because poor) giraffe pressure washer I will mount to the wall this summer I hope. Will make washes a lot easier then dragging things around like I do now.

thank you. I really dont know that a press washer does anything fantastic for the washing process but it was fun to set this thing up
